The Archaeological Society of Jamaica (ASJ) is hosting the WAC Inter-Congress in Kingston, Jamaica from May 20th to May 27th, 2007 on behalf of the World Archaeological Congress (WAC).
The theme for this Inter-Congress is:
“Threats to Archaeology - its importance, its values and its development”
The year 2007 is a very special one in Jamaica and indeed much of the Caribbean.
Cricket World Cup takes place amongst our sun drenched islands from March 5 to 24th. For those who enjoy this sport, come to the WAC Inter-Congress early and catch a match or two. On March 25 we recognize the 200th anniversary of one the most significant changes in the social polices that impacted on our Caribbean world, indeed all of the then British Empire. It was the abolition of the Slave Trade, not to be confused with Emancipation, which came three decades later.
The WAC Inter-Congress starts on May 20th. Hope you can make all three but if not be here for the WAC Inter-Congress. The climate in May in Jamaica is usually perfect, not hot and fairly dry. The Congress will be hosted mainly on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies.
Registration will include the costs of the scheduled events, the Opening Ceremony and Cocktail party, the Culture Yard opening, the Open Day tours to Port Royal and other historic venues, the Jamaica Night and Reggae. The closing dinner dance will be an additional cost. Accommodation will be available in the mid town hotels and at the Halls of Residence. There will be a private bus shuttle service between all the venues.
Please plan your arrival through the Norman Manley airport at Kingston. Jamaica has two international airports. The Donald Sangster airport at Montego Bay should only be used if you plan to come early and/or depart after a vacation on our fabled North Coast. Please ask the Jamaican Embassy or Consulates in your country to advise on your entry requirements or email us for advice.
